PK SHOP is pleased to announce a book signing with Mark Ryden to celebrate the release of two new monographs
THE GAY 90s and PINXIT
May 1st | 6-8pm
511 West 27 Street
Released on April 16th, The Gay 90s, published by Skira Rizzoli, illustrates the works included Ryden’s 2010 exhibition “The Gay 90s: Old Thyme Art Show” at Paul Kasmin Gallery along with other paintings and drawing from the series. In this body of work, the artist casts his skewed perspective toward the turn of the nineteenth century with such creepy yet beautiful works as a portrait of Abraham Lincoln dressed in foppish 1890s fashion and surrounded with a heavenly nimbus, Jesus Christ playing a pink piano for an audience of kewpie triplet girls, and a Gibson girl in a tight corset constructed entirely of meat. With masterful painting technique and disquieting content, Ryden’s newest paintings display his fascination with the earnest kitsch found in popular art of the end of the 1800s, yet reinforces how his paintings now more than ever are a skewering of both historical and current pop cultural touchstones. Ryden’s visual cues range from cryptic to cute, balancing his compositions between nostalgic cliché and disturbing archetype. This book showcases his talent for creating paintings that marry accessibility and technique with visceral resonance and sociocultural relevance, making it easy to see why he garners the ardent attention of museums, critics, and serious collectors alike.
Published by Taschen in March, Pinxit offers a comprehensive overview of Ryden's pop surrealist body of work organized by the themes of his major exhibitions including The Meat Show, Bunnies & Bees, and The Tree Show. It includes beautiful fold out pages of his paintings as well as collected essays by Yoshitomo Nara, Carlo McCormick, and a new essay by culture critic Kristine McKenna. This sweeping retrospective brings together nearly two decade’s worth of Mark Ryden’s paintings and works on paper. A collector’s edition of the book was released in December 2011.
Mark Ryden will also sign books at the Taschen stores in Los Angeles on April 18th from 7-9pm and in Paris on May 4th from 6-8pm.
