Kasmin is thrilled to be back in Mexico City for Zona Maco 2024, presenting a curated exhibition that brings together the creative visions of both established and emerging contemporary artists including: Diana Al-Hadid, Alma Allen, Theodora Allen, Leonora Carrington, Pablo Dávila, Jimmy Ernst, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Walton Ford, vanessa german, Alexander Harrison, Elliott Hundley, Julia Isídrez, James Metcalf, James Nares, Ana Pellicer, Elliott Puckette, Alexis Ralaivao, Mark Ryden, Jan-Ole Schiemann, Joel Shapiro, Bosco Sodi, Dorothea Tanning, and Bernar Venet.
Coinciding with the fair will be solo exhibitions by participating artists Joel Shapiro and Theodora Allen.
Shapiro's first solo exhibition in Mexico, Joel Shaprio: Four Bronzes will open at Meridiano in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, on February 2nd. Presenting four large-scale works spanning twenty-five years of the artist’s career, the exhibition foregrounds Shapiro’s radical refinements to the core elements of sculpture: gravity, structure, and movement. Across the installation, Shapiro dynamically engages with the immersive architecture of the gallery, a site along the Oaxacan coast whose structure is echoed within the artist’s consideration of the expressive capabilities of essential forms, lines, and colors.
New large-scale paintings and intimate compositions by Allen will inaugurate Casa Siza, a gallery and residence in Mexico City designed by Portuguese architect Álvaro Siza, from February 6th–March 30th. Through a visual language rooted in emblematic, esoteric, and personal sources, Allen creates ciphers for narratives both eternal and intimate. In Theodora Allen: Germ, the duality inherent to acts of becoming is explored through representations of seedlings, armor, and celestial geometry. Central to each painting is an idea, the “germ,” captured in a phase of transmutation that reflects generative cycles of symbols and nature.
