From his student days until the weeks before his death in 1987, Warhol drew prolifically and in his studies of the human form, he returned time and time again to portraits of shoes and feet. The drawings in this exhibition were made from life and are comprised of one or two human feet—mostly male and mostly nude—paired with simply outlined plants, objects and patterns. As a group, they provide a whimsical and intimate glimpse into the artist’s private life, while also testifying to his compositional wit and poetic hand.
“Andy Warhol: Still Lifes and Feet, 1956-1961” was organized in conjunction with the Andy Warhol Foundation. A fully illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
