Daniel Gordon: Color Light Studies: Online

Kasmin presents Daniel Gordon’s latest series of photographs, Color Light Studies, furthering the artist’s recent investigation of transparency, light and shadow. Color Light Studies extends the artist’s ongoing examination of the nature of the image-object relationship, heightening his focus on the effects of color and light to drive a composition. The series comprises still life tableaux, each meticulously constructed by the artist with paper replicas of familiar objects found in his home and studio: glassware, kitchen utensils, and bottles. InColor Light Studies, Gordon explores the illusion of transparency through opaque structures, leaving viewers with the impression they are peering through stacks of multicolor glassware.

“For all their grounding in photography, Gordon’s pieces invite painterly comparisons: his composites are like stripped-down versions of seventeenth-century Dutch tabletop still-lifes, rendered in a Fauvist palette.”
—Johanna Fateman, The New Yorker -

The shadows of Gordon’s compositions are equally considered, emphasizing the sense of depth in the picture plane. Gordon carefully constructs the surfaces of his replicas, planning where each shadow will fall when viewed from a frontal vantage point. The result suggests that the viewer might observe the shadow of a bottle through a clear glass, contradicting the material reality of the photographed object. With this series, Gordon continues to probe the distinction between reality and perceived interpretation.

Following a series of black-and-white Light Studies of 2024, Gordon’s newest works introduce color into his ongoing inquiry, inviting viewers to continually question and reinterpret what they see. The series builds upon Gordon’s distinctive process, bridging photography, painting, and sculpture. Since receiving his MFA at Yale in 2006, Gordon has crafted complex photographs by sourcing images online or capturing them with his iPhone, then creating paper replicas that mimic the form of the original objects. These stand-ins, though seemingly improvised, are intricately assembled and arranged in tableaux, then photographed from a single perspective.
