Daniel Gordon: Color Light Studies: Online

Upcoming exhibition
  • About the Artist
  • Explore
  • Kasmin presents Daniel Gordon’s latest series of photographs, Color Light Studies, furthering the artist’s recent investigation of transparency, light and shadow. Color Light Studies extends the artist’s ongoing examination of the nature of the image-object relationship, heightening his focus on the effects of color and light to drive a composition. The series comprises still life tableaux, each meticulously constructed by the artist with paper replicas of familiar objects found in his home and studio: glassware, kitchen utensils, and bottles. InColor Light Studies, Gordon explores the illusion of transparency through opaque structures, leaving viewers with the impression they are peering through stacks of multicolor glassware.

  • “For all their grounding in photography, Gordon’s pieces invite painterly comparisons: his composites are like stripped-down versions of seventeenth-century Dutch tabletop still-lifes, rendered in a Fauvist palette.”

    The New Yorker

  • The shadows of Gordon’s compositions are equally considered, emphasizing the sense of depth in the picture plane. Gordon carefully constructs the surfaces of his replicas, planning where each shadow will fall when viewed from a frontal vantage point. The result suggests that the viewer might observe the shadow of a bottle through a clear glass, contradicting the material reality of the photographed object. With this series, Gordon continues to probe the distinction between reality and perceived interpretation.

  • Following a series of black-and-white Light Studies of 2024, Gordon’s newest works introduce color into his ongoing inquiry, inviting viewers to continually question and reinterpret what they see. The series builds upon Gordon’s distinctive process, bridging photography, painting, and sculpture. Since receiving his MFA at Yale in 2006, Gordon has crafted complex photographs by sourcing images online or capturing them with his iPhone, then creating paper replicas that mimic the form of the original objects. These stand-ins, though seemingly improvised, are intricately assembled and arranged in tableaux, then photographed from a single perspective.

  • About the Artist

    Daniel Gordon

    Daniel Gordon

Daniel Gordon is known for photography and sculpture that employs appropriation and reproduction in order to question the nature of the image-object relationship. Melding optical illusion, pastiche, mixed media, and a recalibration of analog processes, Gordon consciously reframes what it means to have a photographic practice.

Gordon’s process begins with sourcing found imagery—such as of a vase or a plant—from the internet or by taking pictures with an iPhone. Gordon creates print-outs of these images, which he then cuts and pastes onto a three-dimensional structure that mimics the form and scale of the same vase or plant, thereby reconstructing the depicted object in paper. The resulting objects, albeit seemingly improvised and crudely constructed, are meticulously fabricated. Gordon then arranges these stand-ins into various tableaux, which he photographs from a single, frontal vantage point.

Gordon’s marriage of digital and analog processes results in chromatic, highly layered works that delight in both the obvious and the confounding elements of their creation. Seams and fault lines are left unhidden—a wry celebration of the artist’s hand that also acts to emphasize the material nature of both subject and object. This pixelation and degradation of the images, rendered in supercharged color, creates a contemporary take on post-impressionist and fauvist painting of the 20th century.
