Matvey Levenstein
January 24 – March 2, 2019 293 Tenth Avenue, New York Kasmin is pleased to announce an exhibition of new works by Matvey Levenstein, on view at 293 Tenth Avenue between January 24 - March 2, 2019. Levenstein’s work depicts scenes from his life on the North Fork of Long Island and explores themes of history and representation. The paintings speak to the relevance of Romanticism in the 21st Century, and act as quiet meditations on the immigrant experience filtered through the most traditional painterly genres: the landscape, the still life and the portrait. Imbued with a distinctly literary sensitivity and sincerity, the exhibition brings together a selection of new works ranging in size and materials, including large sumi ink drawings, and smaller, delicate works realized on linen, copper, and wood. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition at the gallery. View More -

SEED

Force’s understanding of the artistic practice as akin to witchcraft—resonant with ideas of creation in both the divine and horticultural senses—informs the curation of works that span landscape, figuration, symbolism and abstraction. Jane Freilicher: '50s New York
April 19 – June 9, 2018 293 Tenth Avenue, New York Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to announce its debut exhibition of paintings by Jane Freilicher (1924 - 2014), whose estate the gallery now represents. The presentation is the first to focus on Freilicher’s paintings from the 1950s; a body of work that critic Fairfield Porter termed “traditional and radical.” It includes early still lifes, portraits and the studio views that elucidate her characteristically deft balance of interior and exterior. Hailing from the 1950s and painted within various studios in lower Manhattan, the works are evocative of a downtown milieu that has since come to represent the period’s golden age of spirited, improvisational artistic freedom. They articulate Freilicher’s enduring influence: her steadfast observation and intuitive realism are detectable within the work of a number of painters working today. View More -

March 8 – April 18, 2018 293 Tenth Avenue, New York Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of new sculpture by Brazilian artist Saint Clair Cemin. This will be Cemin’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery. Oedipus takes on the renowned and influential Greek tragedy in order to interrogate the commanding force that human action can impose over what we perceive to be ‘destiny.’ Furthering the artist’s investigation into the symbolism of ancient mythology, the exhibition presents a new, twenty-part work alongside the sculptures that act as monuments to the power of language and family. The exhibition is on view at the gallery’s 293 Tenth Ave location between March 8 - April 14, 2018. View More -

Ian Davenport: Doubletake
September 8 – October 22, 2016 293 Tenth Avenue, New York Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to present Doubletake, an exhibition of new paintings by the British artist Ian Davenport, on view from September 8 – October 22, 2016 at 293 Tenth Avenue in New York. This will be his first solo show at the gallery since 2013.
In Doubletake, Davenport explores the chromatic essence of historical masterpieces, the palette of many of the paintings being inspired by a canonical work. He has ranged widely through history for his sources, paying homage to paintings spanning from the 16th century to the 20th, creating a remarkable record of a painter’s taste and powerfully demonstrating how a great tradition of historical pictures can inform contemporary art. His technique, driven by an enduring fascination with the materiality of paint and the process of painting, is similar in each. First, after studying the painting in depth and gaining an intuitive understanding of its colors and hues, he goes to work using his signature technique, which delivers elegant vertical lines cascading down the panels into rich puddles of color. Colorfall is comprised of a selection of new and recent paintings epitomizing Davenport’s unique approach and artistic vision - one that he has developed to investigate color, movement, light, and surface. The former Turner Prize nominee explains his new body of work was inspired by placing historical masterpieces in conversation with modern technology, such as Photoshop. Photoshop is also used to establish a framework, from which I introduce an element of chance.” View More -
