Theodora Allen: Saturnine
-
Theodora Allen's first monograph, Saturnine, is now available for pre-order. Published by Motto Books and with text by Stephanie Cristello, Saturnine is released on the occasion of the artist's first solo museum exhibition at Kunsthal Aarhus in Denmark, opening on May 14, 2021.
Drawing from music, literature, myth and nature, Allen’s meditative compositions investigate themes of temporality and eternity, exploring a space between the physical world and an interior mindscape. Interweaving the artist’s emblematic use of symbols, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue engage with a history of Saturn, the celestial body said to have been the cause of a melancholic disposition—from ancient myth and the Middle Ages through to the present.

About the Artist
Portrait by Reuben Cox.Theodora Allen
Theodora Allen’s paintings are quiet, restrained, and at times unsettling. Drawing from music, literature, myth and nature, Allen’s meditative compositions investigate themes of temporality and eternity, exploring a space between the physical world and an interior mindscape.
In recent bodies of work, Allen has presented images of celestial bodies, moths and serpents, delirium-inducing plants, and string-less guitars emerging from geometric structures and reliquary-like spaces. The emblems are introspective and elusive, carrying the tone of despondency and the weight of existential inquiry.

by Juliet Jacques January 17, 2025Judith Bernstein’s third solo exhibition at Kasmin, New York, surveys her work from 1966 to the present, showing how she has fearlessly confronted militarism and misogyny in the US, from the Vietnam War to Donald Trump’s impending second presidency. She talks to Juliet Jacques about her use of genitalia and slogans, her involvement with the Guerrilla Girls and how art might be a weapon in a time of intense anti-feminist and anti-LGBTQ+ reaction. -
