Kasmin was founded in New York in 1989 and today represents over forty internationally renowned artists and estates. Placing the work of leading contemporary artists in dialogue with that of historic 20th-century figures, our program reveals throughlines between practices that span multiple generations and disciplines.

From the gallery’s early days in SoHo, founder Paul Kasmin (1960-2020) championed artists with an independent vision, building a unique roster with a significant representation of historically important painters, multidisciplinary and self-taught artists, monumental sculptors, and practices that traverse or defy traditional categories in art making. In 2000, Kasmin moved the gallery to Chelsea, where a new era of ambition and a suite of multiple gallery spaces in close proximity brought dynamic concurrent exhibition programming to the fore.

Kasmin has built a reputation for unwavering support of its artists’ visions, nurturing the careers of many eminent contemporary artists. Equal to this is the gallery's advocacy for the enduring relevance of historical work—Kasmin currently represents some of the most singular American and European artists of the 20th century through their Estates and Foundations. From its inception, the gallery has staged museum-quality exhibitions of works by historical artists along with the publication of newly-commissioned scholarship.

A commitment to artistic excellence and intellectual rigor has anchored the gallery’s mission through its recent evolution in leadership, with Kasmin appointing long-standing director Nicholas Olney as President, Eric Gleason as Head of Sales, and Edith Dicconson and Mariska Nietzman as Executive Directors.

Today, our world-class program is presented on-site in New York, in partnership with leading art fairs internationally—including Art Basel, Frieze Masters, The Armory Show, Zona Maco, TEFAF, ADAA: The Art Show and EXPO Chicago—and across our digital platforms. Kasmin’s two primary gallery spaces remain situated in the heart of Chelsea. At 509 West 27th Street,  our 3,000-square-foot columnless space is lit by skylights and features a white concrete facade. Designed by StudioMDA in reference to the format of a European kunsthalle, 509 sets the stage for monumental exhibitions and installations. On the building’s rooftop, the Kasmin Sculpture Garden is visible from the nearby High Line walkway—a project that furthers the gallery’s long history of presenting large-scale sculpture and engaging in varied public art projects. On Tenth Avenue, floor-to-ceiling windows and wooden floors provide a contemplative space for contemporary painting and sculpture as well as highly-researched historical presentations. Outside of the gallery walls, our artists are regularly the subjects of solo exhibitions at prestigious museums and institutions, presenters of major off-site projects and performances, and participants in biennales and group exhibitions worldwide.

  • For over three decades, Kasmin has published books as an integral component of the gallery program. In 2022, the gallery established the imprint Kasmin Books to further develop this legacy of dialogue and scholarship. Framing the careers of twentieth and twenty-first century figures, Kasmin Books comprises comprehensive monographs, exhibition catalogues, and artist books with a focus on new perspectives and rigorous discourse. In 2021, the gallery established The Kasmin Review in homage to the great art and literary journals of the last century. Featuring leading critical voices across disciplines on the practice of artists, the editorial platform encompasses in-depth interviews, newly commissioned essays, behind-the-scenes access to studios, and programmed film screenings.

More recently, Kasmin has expanded its range of activities to include the provision of arts education through a series of partnerships with local organizations, and invested in new models for sustainability including the adoption of three rooftop bee hives in association with Best Bees. For more information about our gallery, contact info@kasmingallery.com.
